Spice Island Beach Resort is set along the beautiful sands of Grand Anse and is as much popular with families as it is with elderly couples – so a good option for intergenerational holidays. The sea is great for safe swimming with children, and the hotel has a supervised children’s club, open 9am-5pm daily, for three to 12 year-olds. The bedrooms are gorgeous, service is first rate, the food good (with casual or fine dining options) and the facilities attractive. Note that children attending the kids’ club are kept indoors, and children under five are not allowed in the main restaurant for dinner.

In a pleasant spot on the south coast, this is a fun, informal and vibrantly designed waterfront hotel. Expansive rooms include the vast Tower Suites, which have their own lookout tower, and the spilt-level Waterfront Suites. This friendly, well-run collection of self-catering apartments and cottages is a great choice for families seeking a more affordable option. The apartments are all furnished in a plain, somewhat old-fashioned style, but they are homely (stocked with lots of books), have loads of space including a big living area, and come with a fully-equipped kitchen. While rates for the larger cottages are significantly more, they are still a good deal. Each has its own picnic table, parasol, hammock and sun loungers, while the apartments share these facilities. There is no pool but the bay is almost always good for safe swimming.

Taking its name from Grenada’s telephone area code, 473 is hidden away in the affluent, residential Fort Jeudy community, which occupies one of the long fingers of land on Grenada’s south coast. The eight cream-coloured, shingle-roofed villas are snuggled within two acres of pristine gardens and the place feels smart, but at the same time a low-key, homely atmosphere prevails. Most of the villas have two or three bedrooms, so can accommodate families very comfortably. The sole communal area is the pleasant infinity-edge swimming pool, which has views out to sea.
