Expert guide to Obertauern
Austria doesn’t do purpose-built ski-in/ski-out ski resorts like France, but from most hotels in Obertauern it’s possible to step out each morning on to the piste and slide all the way back home in the afternoon.
Since it’s an extremely popular resort with both German and Austrian tourists, the choice of UK tour operator packages is somewhat limited, but there is plenty of accommodation, including apartments, to book direct. While most guesthouses and hotels are traditional Austrian in style, the hip Peakini Klubhaus opened in 2019 and brought a new vibe to the resort.
Pension Gloria
A three-star B&B with 21 simple yet cosy rooms in a quiet location on the edge of the piste, Pension Gloria has a wellness area with sauna and steam room to relax in at the end of the day, and an in-house ski and snowboard shop. Private instruction is also available. Breakfast is buffet-style.

Valamar Obertauern Hotel
The ski-in/ski-out four-star Valamar Obertauern Hotel was formerly the Hotel Petersbühel and is now under new management after a refurbishment. It has a spa, wellness area and gym.

Hotel Marietta
A four-star hotel close to the Kirchbühl lift the ski-in/ski-out Hotel Marietta has Alpine-style bedrooms, a spa area with swimming pool, hot tub and sauna, and a games room. As well as the half-board restaurant, it is home to the à la carte Grill800º steak restaurant and a stylishly decorated bar.

An elegant four-star superior hotel with 56 rooms and lovely views, Hotel Das Kohlmayr restaurant is known for its excellent and varied food that also caters for gluten-free and vegan diets. It also has a playroom.

Enzian Hotel & Zirbenspa
‘Zirbe’ is a pleasantly scented type of pine, which is used throughout the Enzian Hotel & Zirbenspa for wall cladding and furniture, from the bedrooms to the large spa spread over four floors. A stylish four-star superior hotel, it is set next to the slopes, and has spacious bedrooms decorated in contemporary Alpine style. The restaurant offers cuisine using regional organic ingredients.
