While 2020 was undoubtedly one of the worst years in recent history for the travel and hospitality industry, the vaccine brings renewed hope for 2021 – and with it a slew of exciting new hotel openings around the world. Touted as one of this year’s most anticipated, Mexico’s first luxury experience-inclusive brand, Paradero Hotels, is set to open in Todos Santos on January 15.

Officially founded in 1724 the tranquil town of Todos Santos on the Baja Peninsula has long drawn surfers, adventurers, artists and bohemian types. Designated as a “Pueblo Magico” by the Mexican Government in 2006, its dreamy desert-meets-ocean landscape was the perfect setting for business partners Pablo Carmona and Josh Kremer’s visionary 35-suite property.

Go Bohemian in Baja

Situated across five acres in a local Mesa farming community and designed to integrate as harmoniously as possible into its natural surroundings, Mexican-Swiss architecture firm Yektajo & Valdez created a minimalist indoor-outdoor aesthetic that draws from the desert landscape using earth-toned concrete and Tornillo timber. Design firm B Huber (Edition Riviera Maya, Four Seasons Tamarindo) accented interiors with custom-crafted furnishings and textiles from artisans in Oaxaca and Guadalajara.

Garden Suites feature hammocks – some outdoor circular soaking tubs – and cacti forest vistas, while Rooftop Suites come with built-in suspended ‘star nets’ for mountain and ocean views, plus stargazing. With a luxurious residential feel, the corner Master Casita spans three floors boasting a kitchenette, dining area and private plunge pool. All bathrooms feature rain showers and organic amenities made in Mexico.

Eco-Travel & Wellness

Drawing on the powers of secret local watering holes, wellness-focused travelers will love the palm-shaded Ojo de Agua Spa, whose offerings include healing sound baths and Temazcal ceremonies, plus hot and cold plunge pools. The rooftop doubles as a yoga deck and an Insta-worthy infinity pool and half-moon lounge deck also feature.

At the heart of the property, a 100,000-square-foot botanical garden is home to 80 endemic plant species. Featuring a dozen types of peppers, produce from Paradero’s chili patch will be used across Oaxacan-inspired dishes from the restaurant. Open to the public, guests and visitors alike can enjoy pre-dinner cocktails while catching all the action from the open-fire kitchen or head over to multi-purpose hub, the Living Room, for an opportunity to meet with local guides and learn about the experiences on offer.

Sea Breezes & Starry Skies

With Todos Santos and Pescadero five minutes away by car (the hotel offers a shuttle service), guests can explore at leisure or sign up for one of many activities, including food tours, cooking classes, SUP yoga, and guided hikes, plus surfing lessons at nearby Cerritos or San Pedrito beach.

Designed to instill reverence towards the land with a “guest experience that’s rooted in community, brimming with adventure, and ripe with sensory delight,” Paradero, which loosely translates to ‘stop on the road,’ looks set to become an industry leader among hotels that champion sustainability, community development, and conservation.

Rates start at $550 per night, inclusive of experiences. For more information, visit paraderohotels.com.
