The best five-star hotels in Ibiza, including cascading waterfall pools and chi-chi agroturismos

Advice

These are unusual times, and the state of affairs can change quickly. Please check the latest travel guidance before making your journey. Our writers visited these hotels pre-pandemic.

In Ibiza, a hotel has to have much more than a sparkling pool and sweeping views to stand out. In fact, for this list, we’ve ignored some of the traditional five-star criteria – such as a butler or a flatscreen television – and selected places that truly offer something special. Whether it’s a bustling restaurant that’s the hub of Ibiza Town, a front door that opens onto a Unesco World Heritage site or the island’s best spa, here’s our pick of the best five-star hotels in Ibiza.

Atzaró

Santa Eularia des Riu, Ibiza, Spain

9
Telegraph expert rating

Located between San Lorenzo and Santa Eularia, Atzaró has set the standard for bouji agroturismos in Ibiza. In lush, 10-acre grounds, the hotel and spa has been designed to reflect the authentic, traditional Ibizan elements of the 300-year-old finca (thick white walls, natural Sabina wood beams, rustic antique furniture) while maintaining its five-star appeal. Many of the rooms have a terrace, plunge pool, and garden and everywhere you look, there’s a lovely place to settle down for a cocktail, especially around the main pool. Don’t miss dinner in the Orange Tree, a courtyard restaurant with dramatic, draping vines, palm trees and fragrant hibiscus and jasmine plants.

Hacienda Na Xamena

Na Xamena, Ibiza, Spain

8
Telegraph expert rating

One of the island’s most romantic hotels is built into the side of a cliff and concealed by pine forests, with fabulous views of the Mediterranean. There is a lot of boho-shabby-chic gorgeousness going on but the showpiece is the Cascades Suspendidas, a series of heated outdoor thalassotherapy pools linked by waterfalls on different levels, seeming to tumble down the hillside. Rooms have eclectic touches; nearly all have sea views. The open-air lounge with its cushions shaped like giant lizards is a fabulous spot to sprawl while watching the sun go down with a cocktail before ambling into the Eden restaurant, now helmed by Michelin-starred chef Fran López.

Nobu Hotel Ibiza Bay

Talamanca, Ibiza, Spain

8
Telegraph expert rating

The five-star Nobu Ibiza Bay is right by the Mediterranean in Talamanca and brings a fresh take to the island’s high-end hotel scene. The wow-factor begins the moment you walk in, with a cleverly designed, light-filled atrium that sweeps your gaze through to the sea beyond, and lots of natural materials – stone, marble, teak, ceramics, linen and cotton – in a cool palette of ivory and taupe hues. Smiling staff really make you feel comfortable and anything can be arranged, including mooring for your yacht, boat hire (or just bikes), club tickets, and a range of guided tours and activities. Rooms are arranged around two pools and the terraces of the various (superb) restaurants.

Ibiza Gran Hotel

Ibiza, Spain

9
Telegraph expert rating

This is a very grown-up place that manages to be a cool, calm place of retreat, even though the location is very urban. The owners, the Santandreu hotelier family from Mallorca, call it an ‘Art Hotel’ and it does indeed have a gallery feel with artworks everywhere by artists including Fernando Botero and Antoni Llena. With bamboo walls, warm neutral colours, original artworks and wood floors, the suites are not over-designed, just smart and comfortable, all with original artwork and facing the pool or the harbour and Ibiza old town. The stylish La Gaia bar and restaurant serves sushi, ceviches, salads, pizzas and burgers, as well as terrific cocktails.

Hotel MiM Ibiza Es Vivé

Ibiza Town, Ibiza, Spain

9
Telegraph expert rating

Sandwiched between Playa d’en Bossa and Ibiza town, this Art Deco-inspired haven is within sauntering distance of the nearest beaches and clubs, plus a lovely sea-hugging promenade.
Behind the white-and-turquoise facade, interiors are glamorous and could easily jump from the page of an F. Scott Fitzgerland tale, with crystal chandeliers, plush furnishings and marble flooring all featured. An inviting pool shaded by palms is a focal point out front, while indoors it’s all about the spa. The shamelessly decadent Deco restaurant is situated on the ground floor, as is the Experience Bar (open till the early hours), while on the roof you’ll find the ODP Sky Bar. Once a party hotel but now a more grown up affair, mischief here still sizzles beneath the surface.

Gran Hotel Montesol Ibiza

Ibiza, Spain

8
Telegraph expert rating

The Gran Hotel Montesol, an elegant building situated in the heart of Ibiza Town, originally opened in 1933, claiming the title of the island’s first hotel. The building is a Unesco Property of Cultural Interest, so great care has been taken by new owners, Curio Collection by Hilton, to maintain its original charm. Spanish designer Lázaro Rosa-Violán has stayed true to the hotel’s authentic style, although there are flashes of pizzazz visible throughout. Monogrammed linen-laden beds that could double as clouds are the pièce de resistance. Aside from that, all of the hotel’s 33 rooms epitomise modern opulence; there’s floor-to-ceiling windows and balconies, most boasting views of the square.

Seven Pines Resort Ibiza

Sant Josep de Sa Talaia, Ibiza, Spain

9
Telegraph expert rating

Seven Pines, which is more like a small Ibicenco village than a hotel, is a series of individual suites dotted around a vast clifftop and interspersed with residential properties. The sprawling five-star resort opened amid much fanfare – and with reason. Exceptional facilities, impeccable service and spectacular views of Ibiza’s most famous landmark, Es Vedrà, means that this hotel more than lives up to the hype. There are lots of communal areas in which to hangout, whether it’s by the pool, bar, restaurant or spa, and décor is subtly luxurious with natural materials, a neutral palette and the occasional piece of statement furniture or wall hanging.

Gecko Hotel & Beach Club

Formentera, Ibiza, Spain

9
Telegraph expert rating

Bohemian with hints of retro maritime glamour, Gecko is gorgeously inspired by its seaside surroundings and nails the kind of salt-kissed, understated glamour epitomised by Formentera. Flecks of the outdoors are visible everywhere, from the sandblasted wooden tables perched atop decking to the nautical inspired furnishings. Shaded by swaying grasses, palm trees and vanilla-hued parasols, the pool is lined by sunbeds and cabanas. There’s a dedicated yoga shala and bikes, stand-up paddleboards and kayaks are available to use. Staff are relaxed but attentive and never out of sight, and they spearhead a commendable effort towards sustainability, which is especially important on Formentera, an island with protected status.

Grand Palladium White Island Resort & Spa

Playa d’en Bossa, Ibiza, Spain

8
Telegraph expert rating

This sprawling but sleek five-star hotel on Playa d’en Bossa offers a bit of Ibizan glitz and glamour in the comfort of a resort. Lazy days can be spent around the lagoon-like pool, as well as lots of additional areas for sinking fully into holiday relaxation mode. Otherwise, facilities are shared with the Grand Palladium Palace hotel next door – in fact the two venues are joined by a bridge. That means all guests at White Island have access to two large pools with accompanying beach bars, a kids’ pool, gym, tennis courts, a sports bar, fitness classes, four à la carte restaurants and the excellent Zentropia Spa. With an all-inclusive band you can help yourself to food and drink at all times of the day.

Hotel Mirador de Dalt Vila

Ibiza Town, Ibiza, Spain

9
Telegraph expert rating

Originally built in 1904, this hotel served as the residence for the Fajarnés family for generations and its old world, classic feel remains today. Marble, dark wood and gilt finishes abound, while large, open windows and airy, white curtains ensure rooms feel bright. A glass lift and well-integrated, state-of-the-art electronics complete the hotel’s classic-meets-21st century approach. Each of the 12 rooms has a large, marble bathroom with heated towel racks, a whirlpool tub and Bulgari amenities. The Fajarnés family’s collection of paintings by local artists still adorns the walls, but the rooms are otherwise uniformly appointed to very high standards.
