Deli Inspired Ice Cream Sandwiches Hit New York City

Food & Drink

New York’s iconic sandwiches and sweets are becoming ice cream treats. Two iconic local brands have teamed up to combine their fare into summer-ready desserts.

Russ and Daughters and Morgenstern’s are collaborating to release a collection of ice cream based on some of the most beloved Russ & Daughters classics: bagels, halvah, and babka.

Three new frozen desserts from the two food artisans include a Sesame Bagel Ice Cream Sandwich which puts a thick glob of cream cheese ice cream between two crisp sesame cookies; a gluten-free, plant-based 5 Layer Halvah Ice Cream Bar inspired by Russ & Daughters’ classic 7 layer halvah, made with vegan chocolate and halvah ice cream, chocolate fudge, and dipped in dark chocolate; and a Chocolate Babka Ice Cream Pop, made with Russ & Daughters iconic Chocolate Babka. The Babka Pop is coated in toasted Babka and dark chocolate dip.

Each frozen treat is $8, and is available at all Russ & Daughters retail locations as well as Morgenstern’s Finest Ice Cream.

Starting Tuesday, June 18th until the end of summer, the collabs are available for purchase are three locations in Manhattan and one in Brooklyn: Morgenstern’s at 88 W Houston St; Russ and Daughters at 179 E Houston St; 502 W 34th St; and 141 Flushing Ave Building 77, Brooklyn. Local delivery and pickup is available as well.

Those outside of New York City can also order the Russ & Daughters Ice Cream collection for shipping via Morgenstern’s website. The $110 package includes two of each treat, shipped on dry ice on Tuesdays and delivered on Wednesdays. Various ice cream cakes, pies and pints can also be added to online orders.

The collab is hardly the only sweet and savory ice cream to hit New York City this summer.

16 Handles just announced the launch of a salty new frozen yogurt flavor: French Fry.

The limited edition bright yellow soft serve tastes like crisp, salty fries and has real potato french fry pieces mixed in for the ultimate sweet and salty combination. The flavor has debuted at 16 Handles locations nationwide and will be available until mid-July. Guests around New York City may even spot the new flavor on red and yellow billboards with the cheeky taglines, “Sorry, our french fry machine is down,” and “I’m handlin’ it.”

“We’re all about making people smile at 16 Handles,” said Neil Hershman, CEO of 16 Handles. “Since we are experts when it comes to ice cream machines, we had some extra laughs with the marketing on this launch by poking fun at a big fast-food chain known for their broken ice cream machines. French fries and frozen yogurt go surprisingly well, and the flavor really has that ‘wow’ factor.”
