The Four Seasons Athens Is The Perfect Place For Travelers Who Want It All

Food & Drink

Athens is a must-see destination. But after a day touring the Acropolis and Cape Sounion, it is extremely pleasant to return to what is fondly known as the Athens Riveria. The expansive Four Seasons property, aka The Astir Palace Hotel Athens, is ideally perched at the tip of the pine forest in the Vouliagmeni peninsula.

It is just 30 minutes from central Athens, but feels like its own little beachside retreat. The only sound you hear is the lapping of the waves or the clinking of a cocktail glass. Here, you can enjoy a large private beach, multiple pools and some of the best food in Athens.

All rooms are spacious and decorated in restful tones with an emphasis on natural elements. For a splurge, consider one of the garden suites which include a living and dining room, as well as your own garden and plunge pool. The sea view bungalow is one of my favorites and contains a large private pool and deck. And if you really want to spread out, the Arion Riviera Suite provides almost 5,000 sq. ft. of luxury over two floors with a terrific infinity pool and outstanding views of the Aegean.

One of the highlights of this property is the dining options. Unlike many resorts, the Four Seasons Athens has a large assortment of first-class restaurants. For a Japanese meal with Peruvian influences, stop by Matsuhisa; Beefbar is an award-winning steakhouse and Mercato serves delicious Italian favorites. But since you are in Greece, it is highly advisable to try at least one meal at Taverna 37 which serves tasty Greek specialties, including homemade meze, grilled lamb, moussaka and fresh-caught fish.

And if you want to celebrate something special, Michelin-star Pelagos is a must visit. The tasting menu includes dishes inspired by multiple Greek isles, such as mint ceviche from Crete, sole from Sifnos and a blackcurrant pistachio dessert from Santorini.

While many guests will be content to lounge by the pool or to grab a paddleboard or kayak for an on-site activity, the Four Seasons has curated an outstanding array of things to do. History buffs can take advantage of tours of the Acropolis or Delphi. If you are more of a foodie, you can experience a wine or olive oil tasting, and if you cannot get enough of the crystal-clear water, you can sign up for a private boat tour of Hydra and Spetses. You can also join a pottery class or enjoy a tennis lesson.

The spa is the perfect place to spend an afternoon. There is a large lap pool, a hammam and hot tub. Why not experience a unique treatment such as the “Storgi Ritual” which includes a stimulating loofah exfoliation, a relaxing massage accompanied by warm crystals and a vitality facial using pure organic Greek ingredients.

Families will love the Kids for All Seasons kids’ club, complete with its own mini soccer field and multiple arts & crafts activities. The spa even has family hours when guests can sign up for a “parent and child treat” that includes a rejuvenating scrub and a massage. The hotel can also arrange a visit to the nearby Archelon Sea Turtle Rescue Center, as well as a trip to the Hellenic Children’s Museum and the Benaki Toy Museum. And most kids will be thrilled to frequent the poolside gelato stand.

A trip to Athens is ideally spent soaking up both its history and some seaside fun.
