La Réunion, a French-speaking island in the Indian Ocean between Mauritius and Madagascar, is tiny but mighty. Lonely Planet writer Fabienne Fong Yan, who was born and raised here, says you can’t visit without seeing the cirques or volcanic craters. Mafate, accessible only by foot or helicopter, is a hiker favorite for its untouched wilderness. Salazie, meanwhile, “offers a glimpse into history, especially with the well-preserved Creole village of Hell-Bourg.”
