Cruising along the Danube River on Viking provides passengers with spectacular architectural views of ancient European cities. The ever-changing scenery along the banks of the calm waterways soothes one’s soul and arouses a sense of adventure.

VIKING MODI

Sailing on the European Viking river cruise ship named Viking Modi, it’s one of the most enjoyable travel experiences for passengers. Named after Modi, the son of Thor, he was known for his strength as the most powerful Norse god.

Built in 2015, this stylish ship design offers 95 staterooms to accommodate up to 190 guests and a crew of 53. Passengers unpack just once, and get to enjoy complimentary daily excursions, three delicious meals a day and evening entertainment before and after dinner.

Environmentally considerate features include solar panels, reusable water bottles, and energy-efficient hybrid engines for a remarkably quieter and smoother ride.

STATELY STATEROOMS

Most of the staterooms are around 205 square feet, including a private veranda balcony. The floor-to-ceiling glass door opens to allow the fresh air inside. There is a small table and two chairs on the balcony for guests to sit, relax and take in the views. Most rooms have a Queen size bed fitted with luxury linens and soft comforter. They can also be arranged into a two twin-bed configuration.

Inside the private bathroom is a glass-enclosed shower and premium Freyja toiletries. Luxury features include heated bathroom flooring and an anti-fog mirror. The closets have plenty of storage, plus plush robes and slippers upon request. Other convenient features include a safe for valuables, mini refrigerator, and plenty of storage space in the drawers.

Other stateroom categories include a standard room with small windows, a French Balcony wall of windows, and two-room Explorer Suites at the back of the ship with a private wraparound veranda plus a French balcony in the bedroom.

CULINARY VENUES

There are two dining areas on the Viking Modi, plus a spacious indoor and outdoor lounge and bar. A favorite spot to enjoy a light breakfast is Aquavit Terrace in the morning, and also during lunch after exploring a port. This dining area is smaller and more intimate with walls of glass windows to watch the world go by.

In the evening, Aquavit’s lights dim for a more romantic ambiance for couples at a table for two, and for those seeking a quieter dinner with new friends onboard. The attentive onboard staff pour wine throughout each delicious course.

Menus are curated for every dietary need. One side of the menu offers daily changing delicacies inspired by the region, while the other side provides fan favorite culinary delights offered daily throughout the cruise. Highlights include German Night with German beer, pretzels, brats and red cabbage. There is a new soup and salad of the day during lunch, and a different soup and salad during dinner. Vegetarian dishes are provided, as well as gluten-free items.

PORT HIGHLIGHTS

Viking river cruise ships have a large presence on the Danube. At some ports there are three to four Viking ships docked or cruising on the river to a new destination. 

Some Viking river cruises start in the picturesque city of Regensburg, Germany and sail to Budapest, Hungary, with stops in Passau, Krems and Vienna, Austria. The Danube waterway is Europe’s longest river, after the Volga. It’s around 1,775 miles long and flows through ten countries and four Central European capitals. To reach these cities, the captain of the ship has to enter 14 different lock chambers. This is another exciting aspect of river cruising. Passengers go out on their balcony or up on the top open air deck to watch the fascinating process of water lowering as the sluices drain in the narrow passageway for the gate to open. Then the water raises to the top gates so they will open and the ship exits.

There is at least one complimentary walking or bus excursion per day, per port. Passengers are arranged into groups of 25 people or less to take in the sights, sounds, history and flavors of a city. On each excursion, passengers are encouraged to bring the small black box from their stateroom attached to a lanyard. An earpiece allows guests to follow the local guide’s stories about UNESCO sites, churches, museums and other notable attractions filled with wonder of each port.

PICTURESQUE REGENSBURG

Known as Germany’s oldest city along the Danube, Regensburg is a UNESCO Heritage Site. One of the most architecturally striking landmarks of the city is St. Peter’s Cathedral. It is considered Bavaria’s best Gothic architectural work.

The historic city displays relics of walls built in 179 AD by Romans. There is a fort built from large stones and an underground with large catacombs. Romans first called the people here Barbarians, but later this town was filled with noble people and priests. They lived lavishly due to the salt trade industry along the river. 

Thankfully the city escaped major damage during World War II. There was a large Jewish population living and hiding in the catacombs, so Americans didn’t drop bombs. Many lives were saved and the beautiful architecture stayed intact.

Other highlights include crossing over the 12th century Old Stone Bridge. Built in 1135, this is a masterpiece of medieval engineering with its 16 arches. The arches are just the right size for river cruise ships to maneuver through.

Near when the ship docks is King Ludwig II’s castle that he had built for visiting guests. This is one of the many castles and palaces the king built during his reign. Others include the fairytale Neuschwanstein Castle and Linderhof Palace. 

The modern museum next to the Danube has an enormous lion with a stein of beer in one paw. This is a symbol of Bavarian life and Oktoberfest. In Medieval times, people couldn’t drink water, so they drank beer. It was healthier and safer for them to drink. This lion was at the welcome hall in Munich until Covid. Beer gardens were closed for three years, so this mascot was transferred to the House of Bavarian History Museum in Regensburg. Oktoberfest begins during the last week in September to the first two weeks in October.

STUNNING VIENNA

One of the most romantic cities in the world, Vienna is the capital city of Austria. Horse carriages transport visitors throughout the renowned ‘City of Waltzes’ also known as the center of classical music. Composers Mozart and Strauss were inspired to create their finest music in the city. 

Vienna is an elegant city with graceful architecture, wide boulevards, spacious parks and a luxury shopping district. Untouched by the wars, throughout the city there are some of the finest examples of Baroque, neo-Renaissance, and Gothic-Romanesque buildings, such as the Vienna State Opera House and Hofburg Palace.

The Viennese enjoy spending time sitting in cafes with cups of steaming coffee and a plate of the city’s favorite Sachertorte dessert.

Viking shore excursions are available to guests for an extra fee. DAZZLING DANUBE BEND

Take in the natural beauty of the fabled “Blue Danube” as you pass through the Danube Bend, considered one of the most beautiful sections of the river. Cruising this 40-mile stretch through northern Hungary, you will see bucolic farmland and an ancient castle that once served as hunting grounds for royals and visiting dignitaries. As you sail the passage between the Börzsöny and Pilis Ranges, you will marvel at the steep hills draped with towering forests. Majestic church domes along the waterway heighten the viewing experience.

BREATHTAKING BUDAPEST

The city of Budapest provides riverside beauty and a vibrant cultural scene along the banks of the Danube. The traditional hillside Buda is on one side of the river and a more modern Pest is on the other side. As one of Europe’s most spectacular Hungarian cities, the Chain Bridge was once the longest bridge in Europe. It’s made with chain links instead of cables and is a dramatic centerpiece uniting the western and eastern parts of Buda and Pest.

The eye-catching gothic-style Matthias Church and stunning art nouveau buildings are all visible from the ship. A morning excursion is by bus to take passengers on a city tour, before leaving some time to explore the 13th century Castle District. Up on a hill, this residential area has been expanded to its current baroque splendor and once was home to Hungary’s kings for almost 700 years. 

Staying overnight, passengers have the opportunity to see the shimmering lights of the Parliament building in the evening and walk to the eternal flames representing the 1956 Hungarian uprising against Soviet rule, and the Monument of National Togetherness.

Experimental Chalet Val d’Isère

In the heart of the village of Val d’Isère, perched 1850m above sea level, Experimental Chalet Val d’Isère will open in France in January 2025. The 110-room hotel is home to two restaurants, a bar, a swimming poo,l and a spa, with its interior designed by Dorothée Meilichzon. Spring 2025 will see The Gallivant launch its second hotel, The Gallivant Littlestone Beach, in Kent. Sitting on an acre of dune directly beside the shoreline, the adults-only boutique property will have 13 individually considered bedrooms and a Nordic spa adjacent to the property. Guests will have access to a sitting room, breakfast room, orangery, dining room, library, members bar, a sauna, plunge pool, therapy room, and relaxation space with views to the White Cliffs of Dover at the Nordic spa. Invoking the style and glamor of the early 1920s, styling will be inspired by the Art Deco era with strong colors and bold patterns alongside more modern luxury touches.

Portrush Adelphi

Portrush Adelphi now accepts reservations before the property’s opening in Spring 2025. The 34-key hotel blends old-world charm with new- era luxury, the hotel is just one hour from Belfast and will be home to a food and beverage concept that celebrates the distinct beauty, rich history, and golf legacy of its iconic hometown, Portrush. Located in the city home to Northern Ireland’s only UNESCO World Heritage site, Giant’s Causeway, and the 153rd Open at Royal Portrush Golf Club, which will be taking place July 13-20, 2025, the hotel is also near the renowned Dunluce Links, one of the most challenging golf courses in the world.

EDITION Hotels

The Lake Como EDITION

The Lake Como EDITION is slated to open in Spring 2025 with 142 guest rooms, including two penthouse suites, a lively lobby bar, a floating pool, and several restaurants and bars overlooking Lake Como with breathtaking views of the Bellagio mountains. The property is a 19th-century building located on the western shore of the prestigious Lake Como, a short drive from Central Milan. It will be converted into a luxury lifestyle destination that brings new life to Lake Como while honoring the intimate history of the building and its rich heritage.

Rosewood Amsterdam

Rosewood’s first property in the Netherlands will open in Spring 2025, housed in the former Palace of Justice. Overlooking the Prinsengracht (the Prince’s Canal) and part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Amsterdam Canal District, Rosewood Amsterdam will be ideally situated near many of the city’s finest attractions. It will offer 134 guest rooms and suites, quiet internal courtyards, and iconic townhouse rooftops, with decorative details paying homage to the signature spirit of both the building and the city. W Florence

In Spring 2025, W Florence is set to open just steps from the picturesque Ponte Vecchio riverfront and the majestic Duomo. Adding to the vibrant social hub in the heart of the artistic city, the hotel will serve as a modern and sophisticated gateway to the city’s world-renowned art, thriving culinary scene, and the prestigious shopping district of Via de Tornabuoni. In Summer 2025, after five years of renovation, Romègas, Valletta, Malta will open in the heart of the capital. The 23 individually designed rooms and suites feature traditional terrazzo flooring, wood paneling, restored hand-carved stone facades, and original Maltese balconies, with views onto the sepia streets of Valletta. One of Valletta’s first true luxury boutique hotels, Romègas is an inspiring transformation of a 500-year-old palazzo and will present a stylish bar and rooftop pool overlooking the city, bay, and Manoel Island.

1 Hotel Copenhagen

1 Hotel Copenhagen will sprout in the Danish capital in the Summer of 2025 and be built to be a place where urban charm meets the tranquility of nature. Located at the intersection of the city’s vibrant Latin Quarter and its historic heart, guests can explore Copenhagen’s rich tapestry of parks and museums on the bike. The hotel will be a sustainable sanctuary featuring 282 rooms, including 30 suites, a Bamford Wellness Spa, a lobby bar, and a Green-Michelin-starred Chef at the helm of its signature restaurant.

Mandarin Oriental

Mandarin Oriental Cristallo, Cortina

After a substantial two-year renovation, Mandarin Oriental Cristallo, Cortina will open in the summer of 2025 ahead of the Milano-Cortina Winter Olympics. The historic Hotel Cristallo in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy, is being transformed into the Group’s first alpine resort and extending its presence in Italy. Sitting above the most recognized mountain village in the Dolomites, the hotel will feature 83 guestrooms, including 30 spacious suites with beautiful views of the Dolomites. It will also feature a range of restaurants and bars, flexible spaces for entertainment and events, and an extensive spa and wellness facility, which includes a swimming pool that transverses from inside to outside the building.

At the end of summer 2025, Corinthia Rome guests to the beautiful grand neoclassical palazzo, which dates back to 1914. Formerly the Central Bank of Italy seat, the hotel is minutes from the Pantheon and the Spanish Steps, located in the Campo Marzio area. Set on Parliament Square in the heart of Rome, Corinthia has reimagined and restored the intrinsic beauty of this distinguished property, transforming it into an ultra-luxury destination. In addition to the sumptuous 60 guest suites and bedrooms, destination restaurants from Chef Carlo Cracco and bars will be wrapped around a central garden, rooftop amenities, and a spa. The boutique hotel will infuse human connection and artistic expression with masterfully created spaces.

Experimental Roma

The new hotel will open in the Summer of 2025, featuring 78 rooms and suites in the affluent district with the famous Via Veneto. Adjacent to the Swiss Institute of Rome building, the Experimental Roma (provisional name) will open at Via Ludovisi 46, transforming an office building led by designer and interior architect Rodolphe Parente. It will be home to a vast restaurant under a central glass roof, an Experimental Cocktail Club Roma bar, and a rooftop swimming pool overlooking the city, with the Colosseum and the main Roman monuments in the background.

The Newman

The Newman, London

Opening in the summer of 2025, The Newman, London, is the first hotel to be opened by the new international hospitality management company Kinsfolk & Co. In the creative village of Fitzrovia, the contemporary hotel will offer 81 rooms and suites, a European brasserie (with an outdoor terrace), a cocktail bar, and a wellness floor. While the hotel presents a contemporary Art Deco aesthetic that nods to the area’s inspiring character, the spa at The Newman embraces Nordic simplicity, blending minimalism with innovation and functionality. This whole floor is dedicated to wellness, with hot and cold experience cabins, an active salt therapy room, a hydrotherapy pool, and a day spa for residents and locals.

Set to open in the Summer of 2025, Nordelaia Beaulieu will be a new independent boutique hotel in the charming coastal town of Beaulieu-sur-Mer on The French Riviera. As the second opening from behind Nordelaia in Piedmont, which received a Michelin key in 2024, this property will feature just 33 rooms and suites. Overlooking the port in Beaulieu-sur-Mer in Côte d’Azur, the 1960s seafront building is being transformed by award-winning Yakusha Studio with a minimalist design scheme. Marking the brand’s debut on the stunning Cretan seafront, JW Marriott Crete Resort & Spa will open in Summer 2025. Nestled in the picturesque locale of Marathi, near Chania, the resort spans 100 acres of coastal beauty and seamlessly blends modern elegance with the island’s rich heritage. Set to offer 160 luxurious guest rooms, suites and villas, each offers direct sea access and interiors that merge contemporary aesthetics with the oceanscape. The resort will be home to five dining venues that draw inspiration from local flavors, featuring ingredients sourced from the JW Garden and the resort’s spa, ANOSEAS, which invites relaxation and discovery. Six Senses Milan will open in the second half of 2025 and welcome guests to this prime address in Milan in the heart of the artistic Brera quarter. Tucked away in this artists’ quarter, the hotel marks the brand’s second Italian property following Six Senses Rome’s 2023 debut. It will take guests on a journey of discovery through craftsmanship and timeless style. Son Molí, Mallorca

Just 15 minutes outside Mallorca’s glamorous capital, Palma, Son Molí, Mallorca is a boutique hotel with 22 rooms and suites. The second opening from the team behind the award-winning Can Bordoy is set in 50,000 square feet of uninterrupted nature, with landscaped gardens, orchards, and a farm, making it feel a world away from the city. Built around a 19th-century farmhouse, the hotel retains authentic features, including a striking windmill that nods to the building’s agricultural past and its rustic and relaxed interiors. The restaurant, Lassala, offers a menu of plant-forward dishes created by Chef Andres Benítez, behind the acclaimed Botànic restaurant at Can Bordoy. In contrast, the spa offers a program of mindfulness experiences, along with an outdoor heated swimming pool, cold plunge and sauna.

Located on Corso Italia in the heart of Cortina d’Ampezzo, the historic former home of the Hotel Splendid Venezia has undergone a contemporary renaissance to present a modern Italian interpretation of circular architecture. Opening in Q4 2025, The Ilisian will transform the iconic former Hilton Athens into a premier mixed-use hub. Blending contemporary international trends with the city’s heritage, Conrad Athens will feature 280 well-appointed guest rooms and suites, each with expansive views of historic Athens. Along with 37 private residences such as Waldorf Astoria Residences, on the upper floors of the building, the vast 400 sq. m. rooftop suite provides a luxury birds-eye view of the iconic city. Opening in 2025 (date TBD) in a restored art deco emporium and former department store – Whiteleys, Six Senses London will be situated in the Queensway community in London. Near Hyde Park and Kensington Palace, the hotel will offer 109 guest rooms, suites, and 14 branded residences; the design combines nostalgic nods to classical detailing, art deco, and modern streamlining. In Italy’s Unesco-protected Dolomites, Aman Rosa Alpina will open in 2025 in the town of San Cassiano. The revamped hotel will offer 50 rooms and suites. The refined gastronomy will draw upon the hotel’s rich culinary heritage, providing a variety of options, from informal alfresco fondues to exquisite fine dining multi-course feasts.  In line with the Aman philosophy the property will offer refined elegance which can be seen through its design just off the skiing trails of the Dolomites. The wellness offering will be extended to almost double the original size and reconfigured to incorporate an outdoor swimming pool and jacuzzi.

HQ Montreux Hotel & Spa

The Royal Plaza & Villa Toscane in Montreux, Switzerland will be transformed into the first international hotel for Project HQ, the first from Sam Nazarian of sbe. Opening in 2025, the 155-room hotel will also feature 42 residences, after major renovations to the site which has a history dating back to 1905. The hotel will feature two signature restaurants from sbe’s Disruptive Restaurant Group, a bespoke cocktail bar, an on-site coffee shop, a spa, a fitness center and significant event and meeting space.

Located about an hour away from Maui’s OGG airport, above the picturesque Ka’anapali Beach is The Ritz-Carlton Maui, Kapalua. This sophisticated resort completed a thoughtful $100 million renovation about two years ago.

Kapalua is translated to ‘arms embracing the sea.” This West side of Maui location offers a different feel than other resort areas on the island. Located near Maui’s Forest Reserve and Plantation golf course, the land was once part of the Honolua Ranch. Taro, mango, coffee, aloe and pineapple were planted here. Today the historic buildings have been repurposed into a store, golf center and church within walking distance of the resort.

Arriving under The Ritz-Carlton Maui, Kapalua’s porte-cochere, guests receive a festive flora and nut lei welcome. Women receive a magenta-colored orchid lei and men have a brown kukui nut necklace draped over their head.

Walking into the lobby, guests are transported into a holiday wonderland right now. Twinkling lights, decorations and a multi-sensory Gingerbread display with a running train fill the lobby area. ‘It’s a tribute to Lahaina’s Front Street’ said a staff member. On August 8, 2023, a raging wildfire destroyed downtown Lahaina. Maui’s Aloha Spirit of hope and resilience can be seen throughout the island.

The sophisticated ocean view hotel offers 468 Maui-inspired spacious rooms and suites with marble bathrooms and lanais surrounded by 45 acres overlooking the Pacific Ocean, PGA golf courses and Moloka’i Island in the distance.

GOLFERS LOVE KAPALUA

The Ritz-Carlton Maui, Kapalua is home to The Sentry Tournament of Champions. It’s the calendar-year opening tournament of golf’s PGA Tour season starting on January 2 to January 5, 2025. The resort is offering golf fans the ‘Ultimate Bucket List Cabanas on Skybox’ package from December 30, 2024 to January 13, 2025. 

Watch the elite field of golfers compete in The Sentry from the Cabanas on 18 Skybox. The seats overlook the 18th green of the iconic Plantation Course at Kapalua. These tickets are provided for one day of the tournament for each night booked under this promotion. Your experience includes two reserved seats for the day of your reservation, plus food and beverages in the Cabanas on 18 Skybox.

Guests will receive shuttle transportation to and from the event and VIP entrance access, along with a VIP custom-branded badge and gift. Hotel guests will also receive preferred seating for evening entertainment in the Alaloa Lounge off the lobby, and entrance into the Ritz-Carlton Club Lounge. 

This special also gives guests a $200 Spa credit for a one time treatment or $200 towards tickets for Tales of the Kapa Moe Luau.

This private space tucked hidden from other guests redefines a luxury hotel experience. The dedicated concierge helps make reservations and cater to guests’ needs.

The Maui Lounge serves five food and beverage opportunities a day. Start your morning here for a hot and cold breakfast. Throughout the day homemade cookies and snacks are available with an array of refreshing beverages. Come back for a light lunch, and again during happy hour for spectacular sunsets. Later in the evening, desserts along with sparkling wine and a full bar await for an after dinner treat and drink before slumber.

Sea To Garden Dining

There are multiple dining options at the resort, starting with Ulana near the lobby area for breakfast. 

Walk down to the beach to have lunch at the Burger Shack for elevated milkshakes, Applewood Smoked Bacon Bourbon burgers and Chili Oil Poke bowls.

Dinner at the vibrant Banyan Tree is a journey of culinary treasures from the sea and roots of the land. Guests can sit out on the al fresco patio or inside along the handcrafted wooden bar that wraps around the center of the restaurant. Banyan Bites include a Seafood Tower, Kaua’i Prawns and Grilled Octopus.

The Josper 100% charcoal oven from Spain allows ingredients to be smoked and grilled at the same time. This type of cooking gives proteins and produce a pleasing and unique flavor, aroma and succulence. Prime New York Steak, Wagyu Tomahawk, Prime Short Rib and whole grilled seasonal freshly caught fish are all prepared in this oven.

At sunset guests gather in the Alaloa Lounge, overlooking the beautiful pools and Honokahua Bay for the blowing of a conch shell ceremony. Known as blowing the ‘pu’, this ceremony is a time to pause and reflect about the day and beautiful surroundings. After the ceremony, live music fills the room.

Food and beverages are available for purchase. Guests enjoy a Mai Tai with a variety of sushi rolls and grilled Mahi Mahi.
